Removable Appliances

Here at Sarya Orthodontics, we are proud to offer many types of appliances for our patients so that they can have the smile they deserve.

Since each smile is different, we will make an individualized treatment plan depending on your child’s needs. We can use one appliance or a variety of them.

Elastics are commonly used. They are rubber bands and can be used like braces. They are used to make sure that the upper and lower teeth fit properly. However, it is very important that your child wear them correctly or the treatment won’t work the way that it should.

Headgear is often used for overbites, when the upper jaw sticks out further than the lower one. It can also be used to help the underbites, when the lower jaw sticks out further than the upper one. Headgear is not as common as it used to be, though there are many times when it is very helpful.

We also have habit-breaker appliances to help deter thumb sucking. These can also help correct poor tongue posture. Children need to keep their lips closed and their tongue at the roof of their mouth so that it works.

Palatal expanders are used when the upper jaw is not wide enough. They put pressure on the upper molars every time they are adjusted until the upper jaw is as wide as needed.

Retainers are commonly used. They come in many different designs, depending on your needs. Some must stay in while others are removable. No matter what type of retainer, they are all used to keep your teeth in the correct position after being straightened. Your child needs to wear his or her retainer regularly and as instructed so that it does the job it is supposed to. You probably spent a lot of money fixing your child’s teeth so you should want to keep them that way.

Spacers or separators are used to keep teeth apart. They are used to move your child’s teeth so that we can place orthodontic bands. Once your child gets bands, the spacers or separators will be removed. Many children complain of some discomfort but that should go away in a few days.
